Day in and day out, parents and caregivers work tirelessly to support their families. At Waypoint, we are proud to partner with families as they navigate a wide range of challenges, providing supports to help along the way. The work caregivers and parents do often goes unrecognized, which is why we are grateful to New Hampshire Children’s Trust (NHCT). Each year, NHCT celebrates caregivers across the state for their commitment, perseverance, and dedication to providing loving care. This year, three families engaged with our Early Childhood and Family Support services were honored with NHCT’s 19th Annual Unsung Heroes Award.
This included Charlene and Ed, who stepped up to raise Charlene’s nephew when he was 16. Over the past two years, they have navigated their own hardships while keeping their nephew’s well-being at the center of everything they do. They became involved in Waypoint’s Kinship Navigator Program and joined a support group to guide their journey as caregivers. From helping with homework to encouraging independence and planning for the future, they are committed to making sure their nephew is ready for adulthood.
Another family who received this award, Mitchell and Chris were honored for committing to care for Mitchell’s 16-year-old niece when she could no longer live with either of her parents. Although new to parenting, they welcomed her with enthusiasm and compassion. They have dedicated themselves to helping their niece navigate school and adolescence while leading with empathy and grace. They set clear boundaries, build community with other kinship caregivers, and never shy away from difficult conversations, all while showing their niece a different path forward. Through Waypoint’s Kinship Navigator Program, they found resources and community to help their niece thrive.
Charlene, Ed, Mitchell, and Chris represent the strength and dedication of kinship caregivers everywhere. The support of Waypoint has helped make their journeys possible, and we are proud to see that dedication recognized on a statewide stage.
